Following the recognition of the Republican Government in Sana'a by Saudi Arabia on 22 July 1970, Imam Mohammed al-Badr went into exile in London, England. The Royalists, headed by the Prince-Regent, the Prince Seif al-Islam al-Hassan ibn al-Hossein, continued their struggle against the Republicans. The following stamps were issued during 1970-71.

The desert fee was paid to the camel drivers to take the mail to Oman, from where the letters were sent to their destinations. The desert fee overprint also may have used on other Royalist Yemen stamps and souvenir sheets.
